Today I smelled Spring for the first time, walking through secret gardens and ancient stone walkways. Mimosa trees curled down winding roads. Blooming forysthias, bright against a dark sky. Green illuminated by grey: how I love these two colours together, how they suit London so well. Soft light through curtains of row houses. Red roses, blooming before magnolias. I think about the woman on the tube with the disco ball purse, and the deep wooden walls of the pub. All of the gardens and all of the gates, the interlocking bus routes and ancient objects housed in stately homes. The city centre on a Sunday, somehow just as quiet as Hampstead Heath.
