I arrived in Los Angeles in late March. The rain broke for the plane to land in a patch of perfect sun, and began again as soon as the taxi left the airport. The ride from LAX into the city is a favourite journey of mine: every driver takes a different route, and I watch the lines of palm trees zip by as freeway turns to freeway.
I waited for Alexandra in a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard. It was pouring– the kind of rain in movies you know is fake, comical, raining cats and dogs, the kind of rain that makes strangers talk to each other as they huddle under awnings to wait it out. I was glued to my phone, watching her little blue location dot made its way closer and closer to me. She walked through the door, absolutely drenched, and right into my arms. We walked up the hill back to her house in borrowed jackets, the chorus of Tinseltown In The Rain playing in my head. I had never seen the hills so green.
